It's all in the Wave

A few years ago, I went to Mexico to help build a house. This was an awesome project with a great goal and awesome group. I went with my brother and a good friend Matt.

One thing we all realized while there is that all the locals waved to each other and said a quick hola about a hundred times a day! They didn't know each other but whether it was letting a pedestrian cross the street or seeing some construction workers on lunch break, they all did a quick wave and smile. This was definitely something we were not used to back home in the US. We felt like it really was a great gesture to spread the happiness and good vibes. We quickly picked it up, and would wave at every car that drove by, always receiving a happy wave back. I think if we could all put our cell phones down and try to incorporate a few more waves per mile in our driving, the world could be a happier place.

I guess we weren't the only ones who noticed this. Check out this video of people trying this way of life in Austin, Texas. They definitely look happier than your average commuter!

  1. I think the beauty of the wave is that it is a medium that connects two complete strangers. It is a form of acknowledgement of the other person, oftentimes initiated by a common trait or similarity.
