Review: Into the Wild

I recently watched "Into the Wild". It is one of my favorite movies.

In this movie, Chris Mccandles is fed up with society. So he goes on an epic adventure. He changes his name to Alexander Supertramp and ends up in Alaska where he eventually is trapped and dies. It is a tragic end to a beautiful story.

Here are some things I got out of this movie:

  • "Happiness is only real when shared", it is pointless to be happy alone because it is selfish. What makes me happy is making other people happy.
  • At one point he kills a moose, but can not store the meat because it is too much work to do alone. That is what friends/society are for, to help you when you are in a bad situation.
  • You need to learn to forgive. Forgiving is almost as much for yourself as it is for the other person. Alex lets his anger over his parents take over his life, and it ends up hurting a lot of people who loved him. In moving to Alaska, he abondonned his sister and all his friends he met along the journey.
  • A lot of times when you are complaining about your life, if you look around, there are people that have it much worse than you. Alex is always angry and complaining about his family, but he meets a man who would do anything to just have a fraction of the family that Alex has.
  • He also meets a woman whose son has left her. He sees the sorrow that she feels because of it. This shows him how much he is hurting everyone by abandoning them to go on his journey.
  • Don't spend your life looking for the meaning of life. It is too bad, because once he finally figures out "the meaning to life", it is too late because he is out of food and trapped by a river in Alaska.
