Companies with Stock Options

Most companies do not offer stock options to workers. It is too bad because it would add a lot of value to them.

If workers owned even a small slice of the company they would definitely work harder. When people have ownership of their projects, they work much harder on them because there is potential for personal gain. Workers are more engaged and motivated, since their hard work can pay off.

If the workers don't have any ownership, the only people getting extra value from their hard work are the stockholders. Yes, the workers get their salary and maybe better tips, but most of the time, salary doesn't change with better work quality. So what is the reward for a hard working minimum wage employee if he is getting no extra value out of it? It's like a tragedy of the commons, since the employees don't really know where the extra value is going, they feel they don't really need to work more than the minimum they must do. I know I would work harder if I got a piece of the cake!

Although it would maybe make stockholder percentage dilute over time, it would increase the total company value. The overall value of the company should increase if every worker puts in 10 percent more effort.

One company that has this kind of program is Starbucks. When it was starting it was one of the first companies to have this kind of plan and look where it is now...
