For New Years 2014 we set out with some friends for a road trip up to the Bishop/mammoth area. The planning didn't go too well so we winged the trip. This was the first road trip with my new car so I was excited to break it in!
So we set out north towards mammoth with the aim to camp somewhere along the road. On the road the car was smoking a bit because of oil leaking on the exhaust. It wasn't too bad so we kept on. We decided to stay near Mt Whitney at the Lone Pine Campground. We feared it would be cold, but thanks to global warming and stuff it was super warm! We found a great campsite with a view of the summit. There were only 2 other groups because most people come during the summer. We cooked up some dinner and had a few beers around the campfire that we were able to light thanks to youssef's blow torch. A great time was had.
The next morning we attempted to make pancakes with no butter and completely failed. We packed everything up because the goal was to hike up to the first lake above whitney portal. We took a dirt road to do some off roading and get closer to the start since the paved road was closed. We quickly got stuck in snow and spent an hour and a half getting unstuck using a shovel, some branches and a hatchet. By that time we were over the hike and instead decided to rock climb by bishop.
Bouldering in Bishop is supposed to be world famous. We didn't really know what we were doing and didn't bring a crash pad. We found some beginner climbs and had a good time. Soon we were back on the road towards mammoth. Since it was New Years we went out in Mammoth that night. The New Year was definitely celebrated right!!
The next day was a tough one because of the long night… But we still managed to go on a hike and hang out in the village. We went to the hot springs and after went to robertos mexican food place. I got a duck burrito which was EPIC.
The next day Delphine and Emma went skiing at June mountain. There was not much snow but they were happy to get out there and shred a bit. After, we got back on the road to camp at the Pit near Bishop. This is a great campsite that you can stay at for 2 dollars a night for a maximum of 60 days. Everyone there is a hippy rock climber so its a fun environment.
The next morning we got a delicious breakfast from the a diner in Bishop. And soon were heading home.
Trip Analysis: Great trip. Camping is a easy way to get up there without a place to stay. You just have to have the right gear because although it was warm it can get really cold! Hopefully there is more snow next time to get some more skiing in! Its refreshing to get that mountain slash desert air once in a while!
